Ways to Keep Your New Drone Off the Naughty List

According to the FAA, several hundred thousand drones will be unwrapped this Christmas. Many will be unwrapped by farmers, eager to put them to use on the farm as a high-tech scout and data collector.

But it’s important for these yuletide gifts to be nice, not naughty. The FAA has the right to issue hefty fines to drone operators for misuse, or for failing to register their drones in the first place.

“Make no mistake – unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” says U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

The “Know Before You Fly” initiative has provided the following 9 recommendations for safely operating your new drone.

  1. Don’t fly higher than 400 feet.
  2. Keep a visual line of sight with your drone.
  3. Stay clear of other aircraft.
  4. Contact airport authorities or air traffic control before flying within 5 miles of an airport.
  5. Avoid flying over stadium events groups of people in general.
  6. Stay away from fires and other emergency response efforts.
  7. Understand FAA airspace requirements.
  8. Don’t fly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
